President Donald Trump says the United States has captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro after a "large scale" military attack.
In a statement on Saturday, Trump said, “the United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela.” He claimed Maduro was apprehended and flown out of the country.
The Reuters news agency reports that an unnamed U.S. official confirmed the U.S. conducted strikes inside Venezuela on Saturday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity and provided no further details.
The White House and Pentagon have not yet responded to requests for official comment.
Earlier, explosions were reported in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, with video showing aircraft flying low over the city.
