Chinese automaker BYD has become the world's leading seller of electric vehicles (EVs). New data from 2025 shows a major shift in the global market.
BYD sold 2.26 million EVs last year. This is a 28% increase from its 2024 sales. At the same time, Tesla's sales fell by 8.6% to 1.64 million units.
The result ends Tesla's four-year reign at the top. The change highlights the intense competition in the EV industry. BYD's broader range of affordable models has driven its rapid growth.
Both companies now face new challenges. Tesla must reignite demand, while BYD aims to expand its global presence beyond China.
