Iranian Group Backs Kurdish "Democratic Initiative" Against "Dictatorship"

The armed Iranian Kurdish group PJAK has declared its support for "democratic initiatives" against what it calls a "dictatorship." In a recent statement, the group emphasized unity. "The more united we are," the statement said, "the more our fate is tied to a colorful and united struggle." PJAK, or the Kurdistan Free Life Party, operates in the border regions between Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. It is an Iranian offshoot of the militant PKK group, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. The group's statement did not name specific initiatives or the government directly. However, it frames its long-standing conflict with Tehran as a democratic struggle against authoritarian rule. Iran has not publicly responded to this latest declaration. The country has repeatedly conducted military operations against Kurdish militant groups in its northwestern border areas.
