SpaceX to Lower 4,400 Satellites After China Raises Safety Alarm

SpaceX will move more than 4,400 of its Starlink internet satellites to a lower orbit. The company announced the plan shortly after China said the satellite network created safety risks. The relocation will happen throughout 2026. SpaceX stated the move is intended to place the satellites into less crowded orbital regions. This should reduce the risk of collisions with space debris and other planned satellite constellations. A lower orbit also means the satellites can be deorbited faster at the end of their operational life. This helps limit space junk. The announcement follows recent comments from Beijing. An unnamed Chinese representative said the Starlink project posed "safety and security challenges." SpaceX did not directly cite China's complaint as the reason for its orbital changes.
