Finnish police have arrested two crew members from a cargo ship. Their vessel is suspected of damaging a vital undersea telecommunications cable.
The cable connects the capitals of Finland and Estonia, Helsinki and Tallinn. It carries phone and internet data across the Baltic Sea. Damage to such infrastructure can disrupt communications and is treated very seriously.
Authorities seized the ship, named the *Newnew Polar Bear*, on Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing, and the exact cause of the damage is under review. The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation stated the arrests are for suspected "gross sabotage."
This incident highlights the vulnerability of critical undersea infrastructure. The Baltic Sea region has seen increased security focus on pipelines and cables since 2022.
