A sewage leak into the drinking water supply has killed at least 10 people, including an infant, in the Indian city of Indore. More than 270 others have been hospitalized.
The contamination occurred in a crowded, lower-income neighborhood. Residents had complained for months about foul-smelling tap water. Authorities did not act on these warnings.
A preliminary investigation found the likely cause. A public toilet was built directly above a drinking water pipeline. Sewage appears to have leaked from the toilet into the water supply.
The incident is a stark failure for Indore. The city has held the title of India's "cleanest city" for eight consecutive years. This ranking is based on waste segregation and other public cleanliness measures.
