The US government has drastically reduced planned tariffs on Italian pasta imports. The new proposed duties range from 2% to 14%.
This is a major retreat from earlier threats. Former President Donald Trump had accused 13 major Italian producers of unfair pricing. Companies like Barilla, La Molisana, and Pastificio Lucio Garofalo were targeted.
The initial proposal suggested tariffs as high as 92%. Analysts warned those rates could have nearly doubled pasta prices for American consumers.
The final decision imposes significantly lower levies. The US made this move despite maintaining its accusation that the Italian companies sold pasta at unfairly low prices.
