ECB Chief's Pay Revealed to Be 50% Higher Than Disclosed
A new analysis shows European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde’s total pay is significantly higher than previously reported. Her actual earnings are nearly four times those of U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. The Financial Times investigation found Lagarde’s total compensation last year was approximately €498,000 ($540,000). This is 50% more than the figure the ECB publishes as her "basic salary." The disclosed ECB salary is €347,000. However, it excludes a monthly "residence allowance" of over €10,000 and an annual "entertainment allowance." These benefits are part of her employment contract. In comparison, Fed Chair Jay Powell’s annual salary is about $203,500. The large difference highlights a major gap in how the two leading central banks report their leaders' pay. The ECB stated its published salary figure follows common European Union practice. It said the additional allowances are standard for international officials based in Frankfurt. This pay revelation comes as the ECB manages high inflation and economic uncertainty in the eurozone. Central bank transparency is often scrutinized during such periods.
