A detained Islamic State (ISIS) operative has confessed to building and planting bombs against US-backed forces in Syria. The fighter, identified only as Ibrahim, was captured in Raqqa. This city was once the declared capital of the ISIS "caliphate." Ibrahim admitted to manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). These homemade bombs were used against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and their international coalition partners. He also confessed to placing the devices and distributing explosives to other ISIS cells in the region. The SDF, with coalition support, led the campaign that liberated Raqqa from ISIS in 2017. However, the group still maintains hidden networks in the area.
