This shortage means new patients with critical burns must be transferred abroad, primarily to Germany, France, and Italy. The high occupancy is due to a recent surge in accidents. Experts cite a combination of factors, including industrial incidents, home fires, and alpine rescue operations. Switzerland has only a few centers equipped for severe burn care, making the system vulnerable to sudden increases in cases. Medical transfers are coordinated by a national alert system. When a center is full, the system immediately searches for an available bed in a foreign clinic. Air rescue services then transport the patient. Authorities say international cooperation is functioning well. However, the situation highlights the limited capacity of Switzerland's highly specialized burn care network. Hospitals are managing the crisis but note that sustained pressure could challenge resources.
