Nine people were killed in Nigeria on New Year's Eve. The attack happened during a "crossover" night celebration in Plateau state.
"Cross-over" night services are large, late-night Christian gatherings held on December 31st. They welcome the new year with prayers and worship.
Local authorities responded to the violence by suspending all planned New Year celebrations in the affected areas of Plateau state. The goal was to prevent further violence and allow for investigation.
The motive for the attack and the identity of the perpetrators are not yet clear. Security forces have increased their presence in the region.
