Russia has formally demanded that the United States cease its pursuit of an oil tanker in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel had been sailing toward Venezuela to collect a cargo of oil.
U.S. authorities, however, state the tanker is "stateless," meaning it is not registered to or protected by any country. This designation allows for broader enforcement actions under international law.
Despite the U.S. position, the tanker has now claimed Russian protection. This move directly challenges the American pursuit and escalates the diplomatic standoff over the shipment.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions regarding global oil trade and the enforcement of sanctions.
