A massive Russian drone attack on New Year's Eve targeted critical Ukrainian infrastructure, leaving 100,000 people without power in the western Volyn region.
Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched 205 drones overnight. Air defenses shot down many, but some reached their targets.
The assault struck strategic rail hubs in the city of Kovel. It also hit port equipment in the southern cities of Odesa and Izmail.
These targets are key nodes for transporting goods and military supplies. The attack on Kovel's rail infrastructure appears aimed at disrupting logistics far from the front lines.
The resulting damage caused widespread power outages across Volyn Oblast. Emergency crews are now working to restore electricity to affected homes.
This large-scale attack continues Russia's strategy of targeting Ukraine's energy and transport networks during winter.
