The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, plans to travel to Israel with the goal of joining the Abraham Accords.
If successful, Somaliland would become the first new member of the U.S.-brokered normalization agreements since 2020. The accords have seen several Arab states establish diplomatic ties with Israel.
President Abdillahi also aims to sign additional bilateral agreements during the visit. These would cover cooperation in agriculture, mining, petroleum, and security.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991. It functions as a self-governing region but is not recognized as a sovereign state by the United Nations or most countries. Direct engagement with Israel could significantly alter its international diplomatic standing.
