The January transfer window opens with a unique twist. An unusually high number of elite players will see their contracts expire in 2026. This makes the current window critical for clubs.
Spending in women's football is soaring. Last January, a global total of $5.8m (£4.3m) was spent. By the summer of 2025, that figure had exploded to a record $12.3m (£9.1m). This was nearly double the previous year and four times more than in 2023.
The winter window for English clubs runs from 2 January to 3 February. It has already seen major moves. Germany striker Lea Schüller and Norway midfielder Signe Gaupset have already agreed to join Women's Super League teams.
But the real intrigue lies ahead. The large group of stars entering the final 18 months of their contracts will dominate this window. Clubs must decide whether to sell valuable assets now or risk losing them for free later.
