Police in Wiltshire are warning that violent rural crime is increasing. They say it is only a matter of time before a farmer is seriously injured.
The crime is hare coursing. Gangs use dogs, typically greyhounds or lurchers, to chase and kill hares. This illegal activity is often linked to organized crime groups.
On a recent afternoon in the Vale of Pewsey, the scene was peaceful. But fresh tyre tracks through a farmer's field showed where criminals had recently driven.
Police showed a Guardian reporter known hotspots. They explained that the violence happens after dark. The gangs bet large sums of money on which dog will make the kill.
This criminal sport causes significant damage to crops and livestock. It also brings intimidation and threats to rural communities. Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity.
