Zohran Mamdani is the new mayor of New York City. He was sworn into office just after midnight in a private, unusual location.
The ceremony took place inside an abandoned, historic subway station beneath City Hall. New York State Attorney General Letitia James led the oath.
Mamdani, 34, was joined by his wife, Rama Duwaji, and close family. The private event is a prelude to a full day of public celebrations. These will include a second, public swearing-in and a block party outside City Hall.
Mamdani's mother is filmmaker Mira Nair. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a professor at Columbia University.
