U.S. Imposes Travel Restrictions on The Gambia Over Visa Overstays

The United States has imposed new travel restrictions on citizens of The Gambia. The U.S. government cited the West African nation's high rates of visa overstays as the reason. Sering Modou Njie, The Gambia's Minister for Foreign Affairs, confirmed the decision. He said the U.S. specifically pointed to overstay rates of 12.7% for short-term business and tourist visas. For student and exchange visitor visas, the overstay rate was nearly 39%. A visa overstay occurs when a person remains in the U.S. after their authorized period of admission has expired. High overstay rates can lead a country to be placed on a travel restriction list. The new restrictions will make it more difficult for Gambian citizens to obtain U.S. visas. The Gambian government has not yet detailed the full impact of the measures.
