Mali and Burkina Faso have banned US citizens from entering their countries. The West African nations call the move a direct response to recent American visa restrictions. The US State Department imposed full visa bans on Malian and Burkinabe citizens last week. It cited the failure of both nations' governments to accept citizens deported from the United States. In a joint statement, the Malian and Burkinabe governments labeled the US restrictions "unjustified." They said their new travel bans are "reciprocal measures." This exchange highlights deteriorating diplomatic relations. Both Mali and Burkina Faso are currently led by military juntas that seized power in coups. Their partnerships with Russia have grown as ties with Western nations have frayed. The reciprocal bans effectively halt routine travel between the countries. Exceptions for official diplomatic missions may be negotiated separately.
