U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held an urgent call with a top Middle East ally on Sunday. He spoke with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The discussion focused on rising tensions in Yemen and regional security. The State Department said both leaders want to prevent the conflict from spreading.
The call comes after repeated attacks by the Houthi group in Yemen. The Iran-backed fighters have targeted ships in the Red Sea and launched missiles at the UAE.
Secretary Rubio stressed the U.S. commitment to help the UAE defend itself. He and Sheikh Abdullah agreed on the need for a united diplomatic approach to end the Yemen war.
