A new report from the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) warns that sexual violence against children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is now "entrenched, systemic and widespread."
UNICEF data shows a sharp increase in reported cases since 2022. The agency says the abuse occurs in all parts of the country.
The violence happens in communities, schools, and even within families. Conflict zones see especially high levels of abuse, but it is not limited to those areas.
UNICEF defines systemic violence as abuse that is regular and deeply rooted in social structures. The agency calls for urgent action to protect children and hold perpetrators accountable.
