The United States has issued a sharp warning to Sudan’s military leader, saying it is "deeply concerned" by his recent calls for a military end to the country’s civil war.
The statement came from the U.S. State Department after the head of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, gave a speech in Turkey. In that speech, al-Burhan advocated for military solutions and set conditions for any ceasefire.
Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott posted the U.S. response on social media platform X on Tuesday. It directly addressed al-Burhan’s remarks, which emphasized a battlefield victory over the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
The U.S. warning highlights a growing international fear that Sudan’s leaders are abandoning peace talks. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has created the world's largest displacement crisis and pushed millions to the brink of famine.
