Photographer Finds the Light Inside Winter's Darkness

How do you photograph darkness? For photographer Sarah Lee, this question becomes urgent as winter's long nights arrive. Lee has always been drawn to capturing the dark months after the clocks change. This year, she asked herself why, especially when current world events already feel so dark. She found her answer. "I realised this year that it is not the darkness I’m photographing, but, rather, the light," Lee says. "Always the light." Her project seeks out the cracks of illumination in the deepest dark, focusing on the subtle light that defines the season.
