The European Union trained approximately 800 soldiers in Mozambique last year. The instruction was part of the EU Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique, known as EUMAM MOZ.
The mission aims to help Mozambique build a capable military. A professional force is seen as key to long-term stability in the country.
The EU established EUMAM MOZ in 2022. It provides training, not combat support. The goal is to improve the skills of Mozambican armed forces in several areas.
These areas include protecting civilians and responding to crises. The training also focuses on international law and human rights standards.
This effort supports Mozambique's fight against an extremist insurgency. The conflict has displaced nearly a million people in the north since 2017.
The EU mission is one part of a larger international support package for Mozambique.
