U.S. and Russia Unite to Briefly Extend Golan Mission

In a rare show of agreement, the United States and Russia jointly proposed a resolution to keep peacekeepers in the Golan Heights. The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously on Thursday to extend the mission’s mandate. However, the renewal is only for six months. This unusually short extension highlights deep international divisions over the future of the strategic area. The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has monitored a ceasefire zone between Israel and Syria since 1974. Its mandate requires renewal every six months. The brief extension comes amid sustained instability in Syria and ongoing tensions along the Israeli-Syrian frontier. The council will need to revisit the issue before the new mandate expires in December.
