Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a security guarantee from the United States lasting half a century. He stated a shorter agreement would fail to protect his country from future Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy made the remarks after discussing the issue with former U.S. President Donald Trump. He argued that a proposed 15-year pact would be insufficient.
The president said a long-term guarantee is necessary to deter Russia. He warned that without it, Moscow could restart its war against Ukraine once any shorter agreement expires.
Zelenskyy views a multi-decade U.S. commitment as critical for Ukraine's security planning. It would also signal sustained Western support to the Kremlin.
