Syria has launched a new series of banknotes, removing three zeros from their value and eliminating all portraits of political figures.
The move, described as a "redenomination," changes 5,000 old Syrian pounds to just 5 new pounds. The redesigned notes feature images of historic landmarks and cultural symbols instead of people.
Central Bank Governor Ahmad al-Sharaa stated the change marks a break from the past. He said the goal is to restore public confidence in the national currency and simplify financial transactions.
The Syrian pound has lost nearly all its value during the country's long-running conflict, causing severe hardship for citizens. The government hopes this monetary reform will help stabilize the collapsing economy.
