Ammar Taifour heard gunfire outside his hotel room. The Sudanese soccer player had a match that day, so he simply went back to sleep. This moment in April 2023 was the start of a brutal civil war in Sudan. For Taifour and his teammates, it meant their domestic league was canceled. Many players fled the country. Now, they are reunited to represent their nation at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The tournament in Ivory Coast is a stark contrast to the conflict at home. Their preparation has been scattered across different countries. Yet, the team carries a heavy purpose. "We are here to give some happiness to the Sudanese people," said team captain Mohamed Ahmed. "The situation is very bad. We want to put a smile on their faces." Their first match against Morocco ended in a 3-0 defeat. But for these players, success is measured beyond the score. They are a rare symbol of a united Sudan, competing on an international stage while war rages behind them.
