Ex-Rapper and TV Host Forge New Alliance to Challenge Nepal's Old Guard

A new political alliance aims to disrupt Nepal's upcoming March elections. It will challenge the established parties that have led the country for more than 30 years. The alliance unites two of Nepal's most popular young politicians. They are former Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leader Rabi Lamichhane. Shah, known publicly as "Balen," is a former rapper and engineer. He won a surprise victory as mayor in 2022. Lamichhane is a former television news anchor. His RSP party performed strongly in the last national election. Their partnership was announced on Sunday. It combines their significant public appeal, especially among younger voters. This move comes after recent youth-led protests in Kathmandu. The protests demanded political change and accountability from the traditional ruling parties. Analysts say the alliance represents a direct threat to Nepal's older political class. The March parliamentary vote will test its power.
