China is testing a new military tactic: hiding missiles on civilian merchant ships. Security analysts say this could change the balance of power in a potential conflict over Taiwan.
Multiple media reports this month indicate China is experimenting with the rapid militarization of commercial cargo vessels. The goal is to see if these ordinary-looking ships can secretly carry powerful missiles.
This concept, known as a "merchant hull strategy," would allow China to position weapons close to a conflict zone without warning. These disguised ships could then launch surprise attacks at the start of a war.
Military experts warn such ships would be hard to detect before firing. This could overwhelm regional missile defenses and target key assets in Taiwan or opposing naval forces.
If fully developed, the strategy would add a complex new threat. It blurs the line between civilian and military vessels, making maritime security more difficult for potential adversaries.
