UK PM Welcomes Activist Home, Then Old Posts Spark Fury
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing criticism. The controversy follows his celebration of a human rights activist's return to Britain from an Egyptian prison. The activist, Alaa Abdel-Fattah, is a dual UK-Egyptian national. He was imprisoned in Egypt for most of the past 14 years. Successive British governments campaigned for his release. Abdel-Fattah returned to the UK on Friday. Egyptian authorities had finally lifted a travel ban against him. Prime Minister Starmer publicly welcomed his return. However, critics now point to Abdel-Fattah's old social media posts. These resurfaced posts allegedly contain violent and antisemitic language. Antisemitism refers to prejudice or hostility against Jewish people. The prime minister's opponents argue it was wrong to celebrate Abdel-Fattah without addressing these alleged past statements. Starmer's office has not yet commented on the social media posts.
