Hong Kong Fire Survivor: "My Life is Now Chaos"
For domestic helper Siti Zulaikho, one word sums up her life since Hong Kong's deadliest fire in decades: "chaotic." The 41-year-old Indonesian was living in Wang Fuk Court when a blaze broke out on November 26. The fire burned for 43 hours. It engulfed seven of the estate's eight buildings and killed 161 people. Siti was among more than 200 domestic helpers who lived there. In the month since the disaster, she has moved four times with her employers. They first went to a temporary shelter, then to a hotel, and then to another temporary home. Siti says the trauma and constant relocation have left her unable to sleep soundly. She also faces deep anxiety about her job and future. Her story highlights the ongoing struggles for survivors after the initial crisis has faded from headlines.
