A major Japanese trading company is betting that global consumers will pay a premium for frozen, high-end Japanese fruit.
Itochu Corporation's subsidiary, Itochu Fruits & Vegetables, is launching a new strategy to export frozen Japanese fruits. The initial target markets are the United States and other parts of Asia.
The plan focuses on luxury varieties like the "Shine Muscat" grape and the "Yume Pirika" strawberry. These fruits are famous in Japan for their perfect appearance, unique flavors, and extremely high prices. A single bunch of premium grapes can sell for over $100 in Tokyo department stores.
The company says freezing the fruit immediately after harvest locks in its sweetness and aroma. This technology allows the delicate products to be shipped long distances without losing quality. The goal is to sell these items to high-end restaurants, hotels, and specialty supermarkets abroad.
"By offering these frozen, we can provide a stable supply of top-tier Japanese fruit year-round to international markets," said a company representative.
This move taps into the growing global demand for luxury foods and unique culinary experiences. It also offers a solution for Japan's agricultural sector, which faces a shrinking domestic population and seeks new export opportunities.
