Nigeria has joined a growing list of nations rejecting Israel's recent recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. In a strong statement on Saturday, the Nigerian government said it "unequivocally" supports the unity and existing borders of Somalia.
The African Union and Jordan have issued similar rejections. This creates diplomatic pressure on Israel's move.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991. No United Nations member state has formally recognized it. Somalia considers Somaliland part of its territory.
Israel's recognition, announced last week, was a major shift in its diplomatic stance. The move now faces significant international opposition, particularly from within Africa.
