Rapper Mayor and TV Star Ally for Nepal's Top Job After Youth Revolt

Kathmandu's mayor, a former rapper, and a popular television host have formed a political alliance to run for prime minister. This follows deadly youth-led protests that forced the government from power. Mayor Balendra "Balen" Shah, 35, will run with the party of presenter Rabi Lamichhane, 51. Lamichhane leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). The two are among Nepal's most popular leaders. They pledged to address the demands of younger voters. These demands were central to September's anti-corruption protests, which turned deadly and ousted the previous government. The alliance positions them as a major force ahead of next year's general election.
