A 65-year-old man has admitted his role in the "Feeding Our Future" fraud scheme. His guilty plea is the 56th in one of the largest pandemic-related fraud cases in United States history.
Prosecutors say the scheme exploited federal child nutrition programs. The programs were meant to provide meals to children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead, organizers created fake meal distribution sites. They submitted invoices for millions of meals that were never served. The U.S. Justice Department alleges the fraud cost taxpayers over $250 million.
The latest defendant pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Sentencing will occur at a later date.
The investigation continues. More indictments and pleas are expected.
