Museveni Orders "Immediate Dissolution" of All Lake Committees

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the immediate shutdown of all landing site committees on Uganda's lakes. The directive follows widespread complaints from fishing communities. They have long accused the committees, part of the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU), of corruption and abuse. The committees were originally created to enforce fishing rules and protect lake resources from over-exploitation. However, their methods have been controversial. In his order, Museveni cited "widespread complaints and controversies" as the reason for the dissolution. The military-led FPU itself remains active, but its community-level committees are now disbanded. The move is a direct response to pressure from local fishermen. They say the committees were a source of harassment and illegal taxation. The government has not yet announced who will manage the landing sites or enforce regulations next.
