Somalia has accused Israel of violating international law after it formally recognized the breakaway region of Somaliland.
In a statement on Monday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud strongly rejected the move. He reiterated that his country's unity is "inseparable." The diplomatic recognition is seen as a significant shift in the long-running dispute over Somaliland's status.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991. However, no United Nations member state has officially recognized it as a sovereign country. Israel's decision makes it the first to do so.
The Israeli government confirmed the recognition but has not yet detailed its reasons. Analysts suggest it may be linked to strategic interests in the Red Sea region.
Mogadishu maintains that Somaliland is an integral part of Somalia. The Somali government called the Israeli action a "grave violation" of international norms and said it would respond through all legal means.
