Putin Threatens Force as Russia Claims New Gains in East

At the same time, the Russian defense ministry says its forces have captured two more areas in eastern Ukraine. It claims control of the settlements of Myrnohrad and Hulyaipole. These claims cannot be independently verified. The twin announcements signal a hardened Russian position. They come as Ukraine awaits crucial new military aid from the United States. Putin's comments reject the current basis for peace talks. He insists any agreement must recognize the current battlefield situation.
