Hong Kong Pet Imports Surge as Quarantine Slashed from 120 to 30 Days

Hong Kong has recorded a sharp rise in pet imports after officials drastically reduced the mandatory quarantine period for cats and dogs arriving from mainland China. The required isolation time was cut from 120 days to just 30 days. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) reports this change has driven the increase in applications. Reduced waiting times are also due to more available space. The department's new quarantine facility at Kai Tak has many more units. This allows pets to enter sooner when owners move to Hong Kong. Official data shows the AFCD received 291 applications for pet quarantine in the most recent period. The shorter 30-day rule applies specifically to animals from mainland China meeting certain health conditions.
