The group leading efforts to restore Munich's iconic Eisbach river wave has abandoned its current plan. They accuse city authorities of creating unnecessary obstacles.
The stationary wave on the Eisbach creek in the English Garden is a global surfing landmark. Recent damage to the riverbed altered the wave, making it less predictable and more dangerous.
A local sports association developed a technical proposal to fix it. After months of talks, they have now stopped the project. In a statement, they said city officials were putting up "unnecessary resistance" and causing delays.
The Munich city department for water management has not yet commented. The famous wave remains surfable, but enthusiasts say its legendary quality is diminished.
Surfers hope new discussions can start, allowing a safe restoration of the unique urban wave.
