Stablecoins: The "Almost Money" of 2024
A major effort is underway to make cryptocurrency part of everyday life. But one key tool, the stablecoin, shows how far it still has to go. Stablecoins are a type of digital currency. Their value is tied to a stable asset, like the US dollar. This is meant to avoid the wild price swings seen in Bitcoin. Their goal is to act like digital cash for instant payments and transfers. However, a review of the year reveals a persistent issue. Even stablecoins remain one step removed from being real money. They are more like a promise of money, or an IOU, that exists on a digital ledger. For widespread use, people need to trust them as easily as a banknote. In 2024, that trust was not fully achieved. The technology advanced, but stablecoins did not break into the mainstream. They remain a bridge between traditional finance and crypto, but not yet the final destination.
