U.S. President Donald Trump has said he is not ready to follow Israel in recognizing Somaliland as an independent country, according to a report.
His comments come as Israel is reportedly urging allies to recognize the breakaway region of Somalia. Somaliland declared independence in 1991 but is not recognized by any UN member state.
President Trump stated that his upcoming talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will focus on other priorities. These include securing a ceasefire in Gaza and advancing reconstruction efforts there under a UN-approved plan.
The U.S. position maintains the longstanding international view that Somalia should remain a single nation.
