British-Egyptian campaigner Alaa Abd el-Fattah has arrived in the United Kingdom. This follows Egypt's decision to remove a ban that stopped him from leaving the country. Abd el-Fattah was released from an Egyptian prison in September. However, authorities had prevented him from traveling abroad until now. The activist spent nearly ten years in jail. He was imprisoned for criticizing Egypt's treatment of political dissidents. His original five-year sentence was extended by two years. Egyptian officials did not count his time in pre-trial detention as part of his served sentence. His family states he can now travel freely between the UK and Cairo. Abd el-Fattah has a son living in Brighton, England.
