A Malaysian court has sent former Prime Minister Najib Razak to prison. He will serve a 12-year sentence for his role in a major financial scandal.
Najib was convicted of stealing money from a state fund called 1MDB. Global investigators say about $4.5 billion was taken from the fund. The money was used for luxury goods, art, and property.
On Tuesday, Malaysia's top court rejected Najib's final appeal. The ruling is final. He must now serve his sentence immediately.
The 1MDB case damaged Malaysia's reputation. It also caused the defeat of Najib's long-ruling party in the 2018 elections.
Najib still faces several other trials related to the 1MDB scandal.
