From Lawyer to Bestseller: 10 Must-Read Debut Novels Coming in 2026

A Pulitzer Prize finalist and a finance lawyer are among the exciting new authors publishing their first novels next year. Their stories explore love, loneliness, class, and crime. The list includes "Belgrave Road" by Manish Chauhan (Faber, January). Chauhan, a finance lawyer, was shortlisted for last year's BBC short story competition. His novel is set in Leicester, UK. It follows Mira, a woman from India in an arranged marriage, and her growing friendship with Tahliil, a Somali cleaner. Also arriving is "This Is Where the Serpent Lives" by Daniyal Mueenuddin (Bloomsbury, January). Mueenuddin is a Pakistani-American writer. His 2009 story collection was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. This first novel is set in Pakistan. It moves between cities and farms, examining class divisions across 60 years. These two books are part of a wider collection of 10 promising debut novels scheduled for 2026.
