A village in southwest China has sparked national controversy by imposing fines on unmarried couples who live together or become pregnant.
The rules were posted in a public notice in a village in Lincang, Yunnan province. A photo of the notice, titled "Village Rules: Everyone is Equal," spread quickly on Chinese social media.
It states that couples who cohabit without being married will be fined. The notice also imposes fines for pregnancies outside of marriage. The exact penalty amounts were not fully visible in the circulated photos.
The policy has triggered a heated online debate. Many social media users have criticized the fines as an overreach and an invasion of privacy. They argue the rules unfairly punish personal lifestyle choices.
Village and local officials have not yet made a public statement about the notice or the online backlash.
