U.S. President Donald Trump announced he ordered military strikes against ISIS targets in Nigeria on Christmas Day.
The action targeted fighters from the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP). This ISIS affiliate has been repeatedly attacking Christian communities in the region.
President Trump stated the strikes were a response to threats against "innocent Christians" and called the militants "terrorist scum." U.S. officials described the operations as "numerous" and successful.
The Pentagon has not yet released details on the location or results of the strikes. The Nigerian government has not commented.
