Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has endorsed his son Flavio's 2026 presidential campaign. The statement was made from a hospital where Bolsonaro recovered from a scheduled hernia surgery on Thursday. Doctors reported the operation was successful.
Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized his temporary release for the medical procedure. Under the order, police remained outside his hospital room and electronic devices like computers and mobile phones were banned.
Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, 44, is now formally backed by his father in the upcoming race for Brazil's presidency.
