Exiled for 17 Years, Bangladesh Opposition Leader Returns for Election
Bangladesh's main opposition leader, Tarique Rahman, returned home on Thursday after 17 years abroad. He was greeted by huge crowds. Rahman is the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He now aims to become prime minister in the country's next general election, scheduled for February. His return follows months of political unrest and violent protests. In a speech, Rahman promised to bring safety, justice, and national unity. Rahman left Bangladesh in 2008. He was convicted on multiple charges, including money laundering and corruption, which he and his supporters say were politically motivated.
